What Renovating Really Feels Like

Renovating a home is exciting!

It’s also one of the most emotionally demanding things many people do — and very few expect that. Over the years, both personally and professionally, I’ve seen how even well-prepared homeowners can feel overwhelmed partway through a project. Not because anything has gone wrong — but because renovation asks a lot of you.

There are long periods of waiting.

Moments of doubt.

Decision fatigue.

Living with disruption for months at a time.

These things are rarely talked about, yet they’re incredibly common.

In my work, I’ve seen how much difference it makes when people understand what’s happening around them. When they know:

  • why certain stages take time

  • who is responsible for what

  • which early decisions really matter

  • and how to communicate clearly when things feel uncertain

Suddenly, the process feels less frightening — and more manageable. Working closely with clients has taught me that good design isn’t just about layouts and finishes.

It’s about clarity.

Communication.

Reassurance.

And helping people feel steady when things are unfinished.

That understanding is what led me to create Living Through a Renovation — a gentle guide to the real stages of a project, both practical and emotional. It’s especially helpful for homeowners planning complex works, renovating period properties, or managing whole-house projects. The aim is simple: to help you feel informed, supported, and confident as you move through the process. You don’t have to do this alone. With the right guidance, renovation can be challenging — and deeply rewarding.
